We always here about the population explosion in Asia but the facts are different.  There was actually a decline in Asian fertility between the late 1960s and the late 1980s, Asian fertility fell by 39 percent which is 62 percent of the way toward the population-replacement level of 2.1 children per woman.

Decline in fertility has been quite general throughout the region and by 1990, nearly two-thirds of Asian countries had experienced declines of at least 25 percent. Nine out of 10 Asians live in those countries.

This has been a surprise to the experts who did not expect that in Asia’s poor and populous countries fertility would fall substantially or contraceptive prevalence rise rapidly in just two decades.
