There was actually a decline in Asian fertility between the late 1960s and the late 1980s, Asian fertility fell by 39 percent which is 62 percent of the way toward the population-replacement level of 2.1 children per woman.
Decline in fertility has been quite general throughout the region and by 1990, nearly two-thirds of Asian countries had experienced declines of at least 25 percent. Nine out of 10 Asians live in those countries.
This has been a surprise to the experts who did not expect that in Asia’s poor and populous countries fertility would fall substantially or contraceptive prevalence rise rapidly in just two decades.
The most vital question for the Sex In Asia Report is how this is being achieved. Are Asians having less sex? We are happy to report that its strong national family planning programs in six poor Asian countries – Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam—that collectively have a contraceptive use rate of 64 percent and total fertility rates (TFRs) ranging from 4.5 to 2.1 children per woman. Together, they account for 76 percent of Asia’s population.
